Embrace Sustainable Travel
The single-use plastic culture has lasted long enough, and as a traveller, I think it is time to reconsider the way we participate in it. After all, it is up to each one of us to lead by example and promote a new way of responsible travel. Daily, we are confronted with choices about our plastic usage, and it is often easier than we think to make the responsible, and sustainable, decision. So read on for some tips on how to reduce your plastic footprint while on the road.
Carry your own water bottle
One of the simplest and most effective ways of cutting back your plastic consumption is through water bottle purchases. We each need to drink a lot, especially when on holidays, or when backpacking through hot summer cities, and we usually end up buying smaller bottles that are easier to carry. Instead of this, buy a reusable bottle, and refill it in restaurants or water fountains.
Refuse unnecessary plastics
Eating and drinking out a lot always means extra plastics. Unfortunately, every take-away comes with a non-biodegradable box and an extra bag, and every cocktail with a straw. I always refuse the straw, as well as any other useless packagings, which have unfortunately become the norm. Get used to bringing your own reusable tote bag to markets, carry a spork for take-aways, and sip on your drink straight from the glass.
Rethink your toiletries
As a traveller, it is important to carry as little as possible, which is why we often end up buying travel-size soaps and shampoos. This creates a lot of garbage, when instead, you might buy yourself a bar soap which serves a multipurpose, and lasts for months. You not only save a lot of plastic, but also carry much less. That way, you are responsible for much less micro-plastic particles which float around the oceans forever.
Help clean up
The best way to show your active commitment to a plastic free society is to help clean it up. I always pick up trash when hiking and walking around the city. It is a simple, and yet very effective way of showing to your environment that you are dedicated enough to help preserve it.
